Vermont Pet Addendum
This Vermont pet addendum lets a tenant keep named animals on an existing lease. Vermont does not set a statewide maximum security deposit. A pet deposit is still refundable unless it is clearly labeled a nonrefundable fee, and it must be accounted for with the rest of the deposit. Assistance animals required by fair-housing law are not pets and cannot be charged a pet deposit or pet rent. It does not replace the lease, and it does not apply to assistance animals.
- Spell out whether the pet money is a refundable deposit or a labeled fee.
- Unused deposit money is generally due within 14 days (Vt. Stat. Ann. tit. 9, § 4461).
- Assistance animals are not pets. Do not use this addendum to charge a deposit or rent for one.
